Ron Stutts says music is such a big part of his life that he wakes up with a song in his head every morning. Sometimes he writes about it.
Well, I woke up this morning with a song in my head. Anyone who knows me probably realizes this is not unusual, but it happens so often, I just try and anticipate what I’ll hear next. What artist? What song will be stuck in my head for days and days, completely out of my control. Fortunately, most of the time, it’s a song I actually like, and that’s a whole lot better than some songs that come to mind. I won’t name them because if I did, the lyrics would start running through my mind, and that would not be a good thing.
The song I heard first thing this morning was “I Dig A Pony” by the Beatles. May as well say, “by John Lennon,” because this one is a John Lennon song if I ever heard one.
“I Dig A Pony.”
What the hell does that mean? I’m not going to claim I know all the words to this rather nonsensical tune, but I have a couple of verses stuck in my head and I found myself singing it in the shower, and then sporadically for the rest of the day (so far.) I don’t expect it to go away anytime soon.
Christy Dixon and I love John Lennon so much that one time we spent a half hour talking about the ridiculous lyrics in this song. And we haven’t stopped laughing about it since. It was so funny, I even took the time to research the lyrics. I don’t think it actually means much of anything, but “you can syndicate any boat you row.” The meaning of that will become more clear when you read all the verses-and definitely when you hear the song.
Play it now!
And play it LOUD!
You ready? Here goes!
I-I-I-I-I dig a poney Well, you can celebrate anything you want Yes, you can celebrate anything you want Oh!
I-I-I-I-I do a road hog Well, you can penetrate any place you go Yes, you can penetrate any place you go I told you so.
All I want is you Everything has got to be just like you want it to Because…
I-I-I-I-I pick a moon dog Well, you can radiate everything you are Yes, you can radiate everything you are Oh, now!
I-I-I-I-I roll a stoney Well, you can imitate everyone you know Yes, you can imitate everyone you know I told you so!
All I want is you! Everything has got to be just like you want it to Because…
I-I-I-I-I feel the wind blow Well, you can indicate everything you see Yes, you can indicate anything you see Oh, now!
I-I-I-I-I cold and lonely Well, you can syndicate any boat you row Yeah, you can syndicate any boat you row I told you so!
Etc., etc., etc.
Oh, YEAH. You get the idea. Random thoughts out of the twisted mind of John Lennon. Random songs out of the swimming-in-music mind of Ron Stutts.
Apologies to Mr. Lennon, and if you made it this far, I promise my never-ending musical memories will make more sense next time!
Rock n roll!
